What is Chiropractic and is it for me?
Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls every function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system in the body. While the brain is in the skull, the spinal cord is more vulnerable, covered by 24 moving vertebrae. When these bones lose their normal motion or position they can irritate the nervous system, disrupting the function of the tissues or organs these nerves control. So when there is pressure from the misaligned spine on nerves, it causes the tissue or organ it controls to act abnormal and you develop a condition or problem. Chiropractors find these areas of the spine and correct them, allowing your body/nervous system to heal itself and return to normal function (health). Acupuncture promotes and speeds up the healing process by balancing the body’s energy, and when combined with Chiropractic, allows Chiropractors to treat most all conditions and problems.
A. Chiropractic is an alternative health care practice that aims to locate and remove a severe form of spine and nerve stress, called the vertebral subluxation complex (VSC). This condition puts pressure on your nerves, imbalances your body, lowers your resistance to disease, weakens your immune system and can cause pain.
Q. What does a Chiropractor do?
A. The Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) analyzes your body for VSC’s using his/her hands and other analysis tools, and then corrects or removes any spinal nerve stress using various spinal adjustment techniques, coupled with acupuncture.
Q. How do we get spinal nerve stress (subluxations)?
A. Subluxations may occur in infancy from a difficult birth or from childhood falls. Later in life, emotional tension or stress can gradually damage your spine. Violent injuries from automobile accidents or sports can also cause spinal misalignment and pain. Degeneration associated with the normal aging process is yet another factor that can lead to spinal nerve stress.
Q. Who is affected by subluxations?
A. Nearly everyone will experience some type of spinal nerve stress on a frequent basis. It is a “hidden epidemic” and it is for that reason that we all need to have our spines checked out for this condition by a Doctor of Chiropractic every once in a while -just as we get our eyes, teeth, and blood pressure checked!
Q . When was the first chiropractic patient treated?
A. Modern chiropractic began in 1895 when Dr. D.D. Palmer performed the first chiropractic “spinal adjustment” on a janitor named Harvey Lillard, who had been experiencing partial deafness in both ears. Lillard’s hearing returned, and Palmer knew he had discovered a special form of healthcare. Palmer continued to study and experiment on patients of all ages who presented with many different ailments such as digestive troubles, sciatica, menstrual difficulty, migraine headaches, epilepsy, heart problems, back pain and many other conditions. Most of these patients responded well to spinal care -and the chiropractic profession began.
Q. Assuming I’m going to receive chiropractic treatments, how are they going to be performed?
A. A Chiropractor undergoes years of highly specialized training to locate misplaced spinal vertebrae and their impinging effects on nerves. The nerves originate from the spinal cord and travel out through spinal column openings in the vertebrae to the muscles, organs, and glands of the body. After locating the vertebrae that are impinging upon the nerves (subluxations), the Doctor of Chiropractic uses various specialized adjusting techniques to reposition the misplaced vertebrae, and thus, releases the pressure on the nerves.
Q. Can I receive chiropractic treatments if I am under medical care?
A. Absolutely. Having your spinal nerve stress corrected by a Chiropractor is important, no matter what other types of care you are receiving. You should have your spinal column checked regularly for vertebral subluxations by a Doctor of Chiropractic. You do not need a M.D.’s referral to seek chiropractic care.
Q. What are some of the conditions commonly treated by Chiropractic?
A. All kinds of conditions are treated with chiropractic care, such as colds or ear infections, PMS, spinal/disc problems, headaches, allergies, bedwetting, infantile colic, high blood pressure -the list is long! And yet, please remember, the goal of chiropractic treatment is not the treatment of disease but rather the enhancement of health through the reduction of spinal nerve stress (subluxations).
Q. Are there other significant factors besides vertebral adjusting to achieve and maintain an optimal level of health?
A. Yes. There are five laws to obey for those who desire optimum health and longevity:
- Proper Nutrition
- Moderate Exercise
- Proper Nerve Function
- Adequate Rest
- Positive Mental Attitude
No matter what the disease or condition you have, you can benefit from a healthy spine. Spinal health can be as important for your overall healing as proper nutrition.
Among the many things that contribute to your health -the quality of the air, food, and water you take in; how you handle emotional stress; your inherited weakness and strengths; your use of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco; exercise and relaxation -a healthy spine is absolutely essential.
Through our care, we strive to further enable our patients to be the loving spouse, caring parent, dependable employee and/or great teammate that others count on them to be!
We also offer children and infant chiropractic.
Children NEED Chiropractic adjustments: All children function better with 100% nerve function. All kids deserve the right to express their fullest potential. Chiropractic care is safe, gentle and effective. It allows for the opportunity for maximum potential for well-being and immune system function. The first subluxations occur at birth as an infant!!! A chiropractor’s purpose is to remove interference to the natural healing power running through the body. When that power is unleashed the healing that results may be profound. Our pediatric patients typically respond quickly once the low-force adjustments are administered. We see great results with our kid chiropractic patients. Today we find more parents bringing their children to chiropractors for day-to-day health concerns we’re all familiar with: colds, sore throats, ear infections, fevers, colic, asthma, tonsillitis, allergies, bed-wetting, infections, pains, falls, stomach-aches, and the hundred and one little and big things children go through as they grow up.
